………….

’Salicornia', literally meaning 'salty horn’, makes references to climatic processes. Not so long ago, one could walk from Noordwijk to England. Fishermen still do find prehistoric animals and even bones of prehistoric people in their nets. Sea level rising means accepting salty soils and a switch to other crops to grow, like glassworth.

As Larry King visits Marlon Brando in 1994 for an interview on the private island of the actor in the Pacific, Brando surprises his guest with chips made of baked glasswort flour. Glasswort is a small grass-like plant that grows on poor sandy grounds and survives with some salty water once in a few days. It is rich of natural oil, sugar and starch, and can be used to produce food or even bio-fuel. The powerful grass of the salicornia-plant family is grown in Mexico and other desert areas to experiment with food production for a future scenario of vanishing sweet water resources and food scarcity on this planet.
